This 3,400 sf landmark brownstone townhouse in Chelsea NY is transformed through a 550 sf two-story garden extension and roof terrace. The basement was lowered and the roof was raised to maximize spatial volume and support the fashion designer client's desire for a layered and textural living environment. The rear extension is a light, airy space defined by a 3D folded steel and glass facade with reclaimed tropical palisander infill that filters light and views to the garden.
The addition extends the garden-level library parlor-floor living room while creating a terrace for the primary bedroom. The full interior renovation features a new hardwood stair connecting all four floors, flanked by a glass wall and illuminated by a skylight above. Custom CNC-patterned sliding doors divide the living room from the entry and the bedroom-bathroom suite from the primary bedroom, enabling flexible use of space.
