This 3,400 sf landmark brownstone townhouse in Chelsea NY was transformed by adding a 550 sf two-story garden extension and roof terrace. The townhouse was further enlarged by lowering the basement and raising the roof, to maximize spatial volume and optimize light. The rear extension is a light, airy space defined by a 3D folded steel and glass facade with a reclaimed hardwood infill that filters light and views to the garden. The garden itself was designed as a "room" with dining and lounging spaces.

The interior renovation features a new hardwood stair connecting all four floors, flanked by a glass wall and illuminated by a skylight above. Custom CNC-patterned sliding door panels divide the living room from the entry and the bedroom-bathroom suite from the primary bedroom, enabling flexible use of space.
