In December 2016, Inscape, a new meditation studio concept, opened in New York City. Working directly with the Inscape team, we created the wellness center’s architectural brand: a controlled environment of light, sound, and air. In Chelsea, the first PROTO meditation studio occupies a large ground floor and contains a set of ellipsoid meditation spaces: a “Dome Room” and an “Alcove Room,” as well as retail and living areas.

The primary meditation space, the “Dome Room” is formed by a bamboo dome and wrapped with an ellipsoid bench. Specially designed seating pads by Ligne Roset support the guests in all poses and help the guests achieve complete balance and focus. Soft colored lighting is guided through a light-transmitting fabric on the ceiling, and a low ring of light functions to settle the mind and mimic a horizon line, in order to improve posture. Every detail within the Dome Room allows guests to fully concentrate on one’s self.

The procession through the space was also dictated by the wellness concept. People enter the Chelsea studio through a spacious living room with natural linen seating, large Graypants ceiling lights, and natural bamboo shelves, which provide additional seating and retail space. Upon entering the Dome, warm light wraps the guests. Guests settle on the specifically designed meditation pads, and the meditation starts, as the light lowers from the open oculus overhead to the horizon below. The open oculus symbolizes eternal space, and an opening of the mind. Guests are held in a warm embrace and made to feel relaxed.

With years of sustainable design experience, we created Inscape as a space that breathes and absorbs humidity. The Chelsea studio is comprised of natural, recycled, and renewable materials; and, by utilizing local sources and off-site production, Archi-Tectonics minimized waste and transportation costs. Special aromatherapy is integrated in the air filtration system. Lights change color, rise and fall in intensity, and establish a horizon line within the space. Soft gongs sound through the space and allow one’s thoughts to wander. Collaborating directly with the Inscape team, Archi-Tectonics created a wellness-driven architectural brand to be distributed internationally.
