US     PROJECTS AS CREATURES. Archi-Tectonics is a WBE registered, research based design firm that aims to achieve innovative designs that are expressed in optimized, energy-efficient, and sustainable solutions.  We don’t focus on a “style” but develop a specific identity, and characteristic design for each project. We do so through comprehensive, project specific research, which results in a CUSTOMIZED EXPERIENCE for our clients, as well as an optimal spatial formation.  We are passionate about the use of smart systems and sustainable materials to create energy – efficient, healthy living environments.

EFFICIENCY     Archi-Tectonics is an expert in LEED design, which is prominent in all our projects. A great example of green design is The Brewster Carriage House. This 35,000 existing warehouse was gut-renovated and designed with a target goal of LEED gold. The project integrated high-performance systems within the recycled shell of the existing building and we re-used all leftover materials. Our design called for rainwater retention through green roofs, solar hot water heating through vacuum tubes, and soybean based sprayed-foam insulation that significantly increases envelope performance. These projects, along with others, prove our commitment to the environment through our green design practices.

In 2007, we won the competition the City of New York held a design competition for a new, residential, sustainable, waterfront development, using an integrated series of PREFAB systems, and green materials requiring little maintenance, low energy use, and reduced environmental impact. We used a geothermal heating and cooling system, wind turbines, integrated photovoltaic wall panels and solar hot water heating.

BUILT     To date, we have completed seven ground-up mixed-use and residential buildings. Our first building, GW497 is an 11 story, 80,000 square foot structure, with a custom designed folded curtain wall as it’s main feature, a first in parametric design. We developed the geometry and engineering of the curtain wall in a 3-D computer model, which was sent directly to a series of international manufacturers. The custom façade was pre-assembled in Brooklyn and installed in less then 3 weeks on site! The building also features passive solar energy through its West glass façade.

Other ground up buildings include: The 14 story, 40 residential unit, American Loft Building [60,0000 sf], located in Philadelphia, the GT house [2,500 sf] in upstate New York, the Prefab Dub Residence [3,000 sf] in Germany, and the Chelsea Townhouse [3,500 sf] in New York City are just a few of our many buildings.

We have worked on a wide assortment of commercial projects In New York City; art galleries such as ChristineRose Gallery [1996], Bitforms Gallery [2001], the interior for the NAI [Netherlands Architecture Institute] in 2011, and the Pavilion for the Dutch Fashion Biennale [2011]. We have also designed several Corporate Offices such as the Duggal Digital Headquarters [2000], the Gear Magazine offices [1999], and the Netherlands Board of Conventions and Tourism [2009], all in NYC.

Our retail successes include from the AIDA Salon [2000], the three Ports1961 stores: located in Harvey Nichols, London [2010], a Flagship Store in Shanghai [2,800 square feet, completed 2010] and another Flagship Store on Rue St. Honore in Paris [5000 square feet] which was completed in 2011. Currently we are working on the MOOOI flagship store in Manhattan.

Other Hostpitality projects include: 5-star GHM Hotel Tower in Philadelphia [2008], the Abu Dhabi Central Plaza Project [2009] with a 50 story hotel tower and 55 story office tower, the VIP Lounge in the Tribeca Grand Hotel, NYC [2010] and the 5000 sf Duane Spa [2009]. Our recently completed projects include: Tashan, a 5,000 sf restaurant in Philadelphia [2011], and the restaurant for the Brewster Carriage House [2012].

PRO BONO     Archi-Tectonics believes in giving back. Over the years we have been given the opportunity to work on several Pro-Bono projects, working alongside of non-profit organizations, and other foundations. In 2010, we teamed up with the MacDella Cooper Foundation and created the MCF Academy, a school and an orphanage in Liberia, Africa. The MCF academy was conceived as a “sustainable village,” with courtyards designed for specific functions, such as outdoor classrooms, playgrounds, and vegetable gardens. The buildings are constructed from local materials, and made by local Labor.  The structures are designed to have natural ventilation, maximize passive cooling, and the roofs collect rainwater, stored in underground tanks and to be used for showers and toilets.

Other projects are our design for the Jalk chair for the Pink Jalk Project, which benefits The Breast Cancer Research Foundation [http://archinect.com/archi-tectonics/project/the-jalk-chair], and the Scarf Project [http://archi-tectonics.com/projects/scarfitecture-guatemala/construct] to aides women in Guatemala.

EXHIBITS     Throughout the years, Archi-Tectonics' designs are showcased in numerous exhibits around the world. Our solo exhibits include: “Con-Texture” exhibited in the Form Zero Gallery in Los Angeles [1994], the Kunsthal in Rotterdam [1996] and in the Dessa Gallery in Lljublana [1996]. “From Hardware to Softform” exhibited in the Frederieke Taylor Gallery NYC [2002], and in the Art & Idea Gallery in Mexico-City [2004].

In addition to these solo exhibits, we have participated in the following group exhibitions: “Rethinking the Void”, in The Guggenheim [2010], “Performalism” the Tel-Aviv Museum of Modern Art [2008], the PAN exhibit [2006] in the Taylor Gallery, NYC, MOCA’s “Skin and Bones”, Los Angeles, Tokyo [2006 - 2007], The London Biennale [2006], the Venice Biennale [2002 & 2004], and the exhibitions “75 years of architecture at MOMA” [2007], “Young Architects” [2001] and the “UnPrivate House” exhibit [1999] all in the Museum of Modern Art New York.

PUBLICATIONS     Archi-Tectonics’ work has been featured in numerous, international professional journals, as well as in three monographs: “Winka Dubbeldam, Architect” by 010 publishers, Rotterdam and Princeton Press NY [1996], “AT-INdex” by Princeton Press, NY [2007], and “Archi-Tectonics”, a Monograph by DAAB, Germany [2010].

AWARDS     Our work has been frequently recognized among the architectural and design communities. Winka Dubbeldam, Principal of Archi-Tectonics, received the “Emerging Voice” award from the Architectural League NYC [2001], was nominated as “The Best and Brightest” by Esquire Magazine [2004]. Archi-Tectonics received the IIDA / Metropolis “Smart Environment Award”[2006], and The Hommes Award [2010].

We won the Staten Island “Sustainable Housing Competition” [2004], and recently won the 5,500,000 square foot “Yulin Art District Design Competition” [2012]. In addition to winning awards, Archi-Tectonics has been a finalist in a multiplicity of invited design competitions including: Tel Aviv Design Competition, Abu Dhabi “Central Plaza Competition, the Houthaven Competition in Amsterdam and recently we collaborated on design competitions for large areas in Yulin and Jingzhou in China [2014].

WHY THIS WORKS     All of the aforementioned skills and experience, combined with our highly qualified team of designers, engi-neers and consultants, and our 20 years of expertise in the FTF [file to factory] process, RESULT IN GREAT BUILDINGS. We facilitate what we believe construction should be: personal, high end and affordable.

Our focus on creating identity for a customized design, partnered with intense teamwork has multiplied the return on our client’s investments, often more then 300%. We are proud and happy to have worked with a great group of clients, Gear Magazine, Duggall, Frederique van de Wall, Ellen von Unwerth, John Legend, and Tia Cibani [Ports 1961] to name a few.
